Artist Statement:
WHAT did you make?
I make art. Sometimes it takes a long time and sometimes they're quick. Sometimes they're complex and sometimes they're simple.
HOW did you make it?
I make my art with patience. A lot of people are really impressed by my designs sometimes but honestly they just take patience. If you sit down with an idea and the will to make it into reality, you can do anything.
WHY is it important?
My art is about making people think. When you see it, you see beauty and complexity and it inspires people to look at something in a different light.

The hardest part of writing is finding a theme. You can read a book or a play and feel so moved by it, but putting your feelings into words is always difficult. Art is the same way. Giving words to the way a piece of art makes you feel is somewhat impossible. And trying to find a common thread between many pieces of art is even more complicated! So I hope you understand how as an artist, trying to define my works as a whole has taken a lot of thought and time. After much consideration my theme is:
Simple Shapes with Complex Patterns
When looking at all of my projects this year, a common piece they all have is some sort of carving in them or patterns. To fully understand my obsession with patterns you can visit my other website alicandoart.weebly.com which has pictures of all of my drawings and paintings. I never feel more at home or at peace than when I have a pattern in mind and can draw or carve mindlessly without worry or stress....just me and the art. I feel like life sometimes can just get so confusing and hectic and when I don't know where to turn or how something will work out, the patterns in my art calm me down because they're simple, but repeated over and over they become beautiful. I doodle in class, while watching TV, while eating-- basically anywhere. And this year I've started doodling things specifically for ceramics. Things I know would look great in clay. A good example of this is the henna designs that I used on the lips of my porcelain cups. I found those on the internet one day and just fell in love with the endless patterns I could make with them, and even though I started making them on ceramics projects first, I later branched off to drawing them on paper too. With this theme I included the idea of simple shapes as well because I know how overwhelming things can be when they're 3D. Too much color or too much space can overwhelm a piece and that's why, I try to keep my shapes simple-- just cylinders and bowls, nothing too crazy. I think this works for the kind of art I like to do because the simple shapes give a sense of calm, and normalcy, that allows the interpreter to really see the design and feel the way the pattern moves. I've loved ceramics this year, and I hope that anyone looking at this blog in the future enjoys reading about all of my creations and is somehow made happier by all of this work that I've done.
